Several companies from the Wilmington area will be at Cape Fear Community College’s Schwartz Center Friday for an NC Works job fair, which is open to the public but targeted towards veterans.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center, PPD, and the NC State Ports Authority are just a few of the 70 companies looking to hire our heroes.

They will be lining up at the Schwartz Center at CFCC Friday morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organizers say those interested should come dressed in business casual attire with several copies of their resumes prepared.

Career counselors will also be on hand to help veterans transition into a civilian job search, offering tips for resume writing, networking, interviewing, and social media.

CFCC is not providing parking so organizers suggest you park at the Wilmington Convention Center parking deck.

Vertex booth draws crowds

Hundreds flocked to the job fair booth of Vertex Rail Technologies, a new company bringing over 1300 jobs to the Wilmington area.

“It’s been nonstop since we got here at ten so it’s been pretty intense,” said Scott Bauer, Vertex V.P. of Operations.

Bauer said he was impressed that so many people came out to the event, especially the military veterans.

“It’s great to have the veterans. I’m very excited to know that the military is with the colleges and the schools around here- very influential within the area.”

For at least one local veteran, the feeling was mutual.

“It’s fantastic for the community. I’m so happy that they’re coming here to Wilmington,” said Jerard Brewer, a Marine Corp Reserves veteran.

Brewer said he could see himself working for the new company one day.

“I’ve got great marketable skills. You know we’re marines, you give us something to do and we’re going to take it and run with it, take it to the next level,“ Brewer said.
