In this video, I discuss the importance of upskilling to improve your professional worth and increase your chances of getting better benefits and pay. I provide practical ways to upskill, such as taking online courses and learning from industry leaders. I also demonstrate how to identify valuable skills by analyzing the profiles of successful professionals in your desired field. Additionally, I share tips on using LinkedIn and other platforms to find job opportunities and acquire the necessary skills. Take action by exploring these strategies and start your journey toward career advancement.

Once you have a pretty good idea of what career or careers you want to pursue, you may find your lack of knowledge or skills will make it hard for you to find employment. Let’s say you sold medical products to hospitals for a number of years and want to transition into a role where you are a care provider, such as licensed practical nurse or registered nurse. You will need additional schooling in order to make that dramatic leap.

Perhaps you seek a different career path in the same or a similar profession. A programmer who wants to get into management could consider a master’s of business degree or a leadership/executive training program at a local college. That programmer could volunteer for managerial-style jobs with an IT association to experience, in a small way, the skills demanded of a larger managerial position in the future.

You can, in effect, conduct your own skill gap analysis to determine what education, degrees and training โ€” or combination of all 3 โ€” might be needed in a different career. Then you need to find the education or training you require for your new career, an issue less of a problem in large or medium-sized cities where many colleges and private institutions have created night and weekend courses and degrees for working adults. (If you’re unemployed you may qualify for financial assistance and be able to attend day classes.)

To identify your skill gaps, begin with some research:

โ€ข Start by gathering 10 job descriptions for roles that align with your interests. Focus on one role at a time, without mixing them together. As you review the job descriptions, mark the skills and responsibilities you possess (include them on your resume) and those you lack. For the skills you lack, make a list and proactively search for educational opportunities to acquire the knowledge and certifications needed to bridge those gaps

โ€ข LinkedIn endorsements section of other professionalsโ€™ profiles that are similar to your background or of those you aspire to become on your career trajectory

โ€ข LinkedIn Jobs -> Resume Builder -> Create From Profile -> Job Title

โ€ข ChatGPT: “Find 15 keywords an ATS requires for (TITLE) in the (INDUSTRY) indusry”
