Skills, also called “buzzwords,” or a core competency section (or areas of expertise) are important on a resume. As a former recruiter, I understood how impactful skills were. I would look for keywords in job descriptions to identify candidates who fit openings. It also helps to use terms that resonate with hiring managers in their department or space. You can find “buzzwords” from job descriptions or your LinkedIn endorsements to filter into your resume and comply with applicant tracking systems (ATS). You want strategies for the digital application process, as ATS not only organizes applications but can screen candidates based on content. At this point, recruiters can search submissions using keywords and phrases to advance candidates. It’s mandatory to add this core competency section to your resume. Continue adding as you gain more experience with new methodologies, leadership strategies, and technical skills. And fill your resume with hard skills! Only include soft skills as adjectives in your summary. That is the only place for soft skills.
