๐ŸŒž I’m a HUGE fan of CBS’ Sunday Morning (cue Wynton Marsalis’ playing “Abblasen”), and this week, as a career coach, they were speaking my language! They ran a clever and funny little segment comparing job hunting to dating.

Some key takeaways from the video included:

  • When job searching online, think of it like using a dating app. You need to craft an engaging profile and carefully select your photos/posts to attract potential employers.
  • Optimize your profile by highlighting accomplishments, skills and passions that relate to the jobs you want. Keep it brief but ensure it clearly shows what makes you stand out.
  • Consider your digital “photos” like your LinkedIn background and posts. Select images that are professionally presented but also give glimpses of your personality. Avoid low-quality or irrelevant content.
  • Just like on dating apps, you want to generate interest so recruiters and hiring managers will want to learn more about you. Craft an intriguing headline and compelling profile that leaves them wondering.
  • Regularly interacting with recruiters online can help you stay top of mind for opportunities. Engage with their posts, share relevant content, and start conversations to build familiarity.
  • Be strategic with whom you connect with – look for recruiters and people within companies you want to work for rather than random connections. Quality over quantity applies here.
  • The goals are the same as dating apps – generate interest and matches that could turn into job interviews. With the right online presence, you can optimize your chances of being discovered.
