Picture this: You’re sitting in an interview, the hiring manager is studying your resume with a raised eyebrow, and there it is…the gap. That glaringly empty space on your resume like an awkward pause in a conversation. What happened there? Did you take up llama herding in the Andes? ๐๐ Or maybe you became a full-time Netflix marathoner? ๐บ๐ฟ
Well, let me tell you about one of my clients, “Steve.” Steve had a gap in his resumeโa good ol’ 18-month chunk where he wasn’t working in his field. Now, Steve wasn’t exactly off saving the world from an impending asteroid collision ๐๐, but he wasnโt twiddling his thumbs either. Nope, he was focused on taking care of his family during some tough times and pursuing a passion project: building custom treehouses for his kids. ๐ณ๐ก Yep, he went full-on “Dad Mode” while also fine-tuning his carpentry skills. Steve wasnโt “unemployed”; he was just working on different kinds of projectsโones that didnโt come with a W-2 form.
So, when the gap question popped up in his interview, we framed it as his “Masterโs Degree in Life Experience.” ๐๐คน He talked about how those months taught him to juggle responsibilities, develop hands-on skills, and be resourceful. He had stories about collaborating with neighbors for lumber and learning to use power tools like a pro. It was like ‘Home Improvement,’ but without Tim Allen’s cheesy jokes. ๐๐จ
And You Know What? It Worked.
Steveโs future boss wasnโt even concerned about the gap because he could see the value behind it. Steve didnโt just say, “I had a family matter.” He showed how those months made him even more capable than before. Boom!๐ฅ He landed the job. Gap? What gap? We turned it into a launchpad for his career leap. ๐โ๏ธ
