πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ Kyra came to me as a Manager of Managed Services at UKG seeking a new role focusing on managing consultancy processes and talent.

The resolutions we provided were:

πŸ‘‰ Finding a format that resonates with her new targeted role.

πŸ‘‰ Building up her transferable team leadership and strategic consultancy skills, methodologies, KPIs, and wins.

πŸ‘‰ Improved messaging so readers know what she was trying to do and what value she can offer.

πŸ‘‰ More skills that are ATS compliant so she can stand out in a highly competitive industry and role.

πŸ‘‰ Elevated experience section so she demonstrated more accomplishments, value offerings, and metrics over tasks.

πŸ‘‰ The proper layout and format (in order) including a Summary, Key Skills/Technical Aptitude, Accomplishments, Experience, Education, Certification/Training, Affiliation, and Volunteerism.

πŸ’₯ Well, it worked!

πŸ’₯ Kyra sent me this wonderful note after I helped her with some salary negotiation training, which I just had to share! She is now a Consulting Manager with Deloitte.

“Thank you again! Just a little negotiating required. Using the content you shared early in the process I was able to let them know that the salary for the position did not meet my needs. They made a very strong offer I countered on more of the benefit side of things but I’m very happy and looking forward to starting in April.”

Negotiations are not something to be taken lightly! With every negotiation you initially complete with a new company, the rest of your salary increases are based directly on that number in most cases.

You need to make sure it’s a salary that’s fair and worthy of the time you are sacrificing away from your family to go to a company and gift them 40+ hours each week.

Here are 5 key takeaways:
1️⃣ Identify your range, considerations of the proper range, and remember the lowest number is typically what #recruiters remember.

πŸ’• Research the role, industry, and geographical pay rates on Glassdoor or Salary.

πŸ•’ Figure out your USP and value offerings that relate to the targeted role and re-emphasize this at the negotiations table.

πŸ€ Reasons to negotiate salary (education, experience, and skills, cost of living, multiple offers, etc.).

βœ‹ Ways to increase your perceived worth.

6 months. It took me 6 months to land a full-time recruiting job in Los Angeles. I was in Cleveland, job hunting from 2,341 miles away.

I traveled to LA with my wife for an interview with BP in Long Beach.

Prior to leaving for the flight, Johnson Controls out of Whittier emailed me requesting a phone interview, which I accepted. It was going to be completed while I was still in Tinseltown.

Funny thing is, while there, after the BP interview, and while looking for apartments, Johnson Controls called me…for that scheduled interview.

I missed the call. Totally forgot. Call it a brainfart. Call it mass confusion of the mini-vacation, or the apartment hunting itinerary, but it happened.

So I called back and chatted with the Head of HR for the Western region, explained what happened, and he was totally cool.

He even offered that I come in for an on-site meeting, which I respectfully declined due to time constraints. I explained that I would have to fly back out to make that work.

Talk about being a crappy candidate.

But hey! It worked! Literally, about 30 minutes later the manager called and made me an offer! I said I’d let him know soon, still had to find out what BP was going to do.

BP made an offer and now I had a bargaining chip to see if I could squeeze anything more out of those 2 companies.

BP said that’s the best they could do. Johnson Controls said they’ll add in relocation and $5K more.

Sold!

I started my way west, covered on the dime of Johnson Controls, and with a couple of weeks’ salary more.

The moral of the story? Don’t be scared to negotiate. Employers expect it more often than not.

Every single raise, bonus, etc. comes off of that initial starting salary. Thousands of dollars are at stake, especially when you’re talking about 5, 10, etc. years later.

Get what’s yours. But be prepared to tell those employers just why they need to make that investment in you. Show them your value!
