Hey there, aspiring actors and future industry leaders! This post is for anyone who’s considering and #internship or ever dreamt of conquering the stage or screen, but maybe feels a little lost on the “how-to” of getting there. Been there, done that (and ironed a lot of wrinkled clothes in between).

Listen, the road to success in any industry is paved with its fair share of…well, not-so-glamorous moments. As an actor, I learned this early on with the concept of “set protocol.” Think Hollywood, bright lights, movie magic โ€“ except for the part where you might be fetching lattes for the crew or quietly organizing craft services in the background. It’s all part of the process, and guess what? It’s valuable! Being on set, even in a seemingly “unimportant” role, teaches you the rhythm of a production, the unspoken rules, and how to anticipate needs before they even arise.

And believe me, nothing in books can prepare you for meeting a celebrity, knowing when to block movements, knowing when to speak lines, knowing where your mark is when you can’t see anything…just knowing when to be where and what to do when…

This might sound familiar to anyone who’s done their fair share of internships. #InternLife, anyone? Early on in my college years, I spent semesters interning at marketing agencies…for FREE!

Let me tell you, some days felt like I was just filing papers or making endless copies. But guess what? Just like on set, it was about paying attention, absorbing information, and becoming a reliable, detail-oriented asset. Those internships not only equipped me with valuable marketing skills, but they also helped me build a network of contacts and, most importantly, gave me stellar recommendations that I still leverage to this day.

Pro tip: When you intern, take notes! Track the key tasks you’re assigned, the processes you learn, and the people you meet (with contact info)! Remember to just listen to every single word everyone says, and track all the main tasks or processes they assign you. You cannot go wrong if you execute every single thing everyone tells you the exact way they tell you for the few months you were there! Get a good recommendation, track the references contact information, put it on your rรฉsumรฉ!

So, embrace the hustle! Whether it’s interning at your dream agency or fetching coffee on set, every experience is a stepping stone. By showing that you’re a team player, a quick learner, and someone who pays attention to detail, you’re setting yourself up for future success. Remember, even the biggest stars started somewhere, and chances are, they weren’t sipping champagne in their trailers on day one.

So keep that smile on, keep learning, and who knows? Maybe someday you’ll be the one the interns are fetching coffee for! โ˜•๏ธ

And I had to post a photo of when I worked on Parental Guidance with Bette Midler. She was amazingly kind and approachable!
