The executive job search can mess with your head.

Especially when you start looking around and thinking:

“Am I competing against people 15 years younger who know every new technology better than I do?”

I hear versions of this from experienced professionals all the time.

FRUSTRATION: “I’m competing against younger, more tech-savvy candidates.”

DESIRE: “I want a higher-paying role that actually reflects my experience and value.”

FEAR: “What if I miss the right opportunity because I’m not positioning myself correctly?”

Here’s what I tell clients:

Stop trying to compete on age.

Compete on VALUE.

Younger candidates may bring newer technical skills.

Great.

You may bring something completely different:

Years of leadership.

Business judgment.

Pattern recognition.

Industry relationships.

Crisis management.

Executive presence.

Experience building teams.

Knowing what to do when the playbook stops working.

That’s valuable too.

But there’s a catch.

You can’t expect employers to figure that out themselves.

If your resume looks dated…

Your LinkedIn hasn’t been touched since 2019…

You’re invisible to your network…

And your interview answers spend 10 minutes walking someone through your entire career…

Your experience can actually start working AGAINST you.

That’s where branding matters.

Modernize your resume.

Strengthen your LinkedIn presence.

Learn the technology affecting your industry.

Reconnect with your network BEFORE you need something.

And get really damn good at explaining why your experience solves TODAY’S problems.

You don’t need to pretend you’re the youngest candidate in the room.

You need to make it obvious why you’re one of the most valuable.

MJW Takeaway:

Your competition isn’t “younger people.”

Your competition is anyone who communicates their value better than you do.

Experience gives you ammunition.

Branding gives you aim.

Networking gets you into the room.

And when the right opportunity comes along, you want all three working together.
