The candidate interviews with the hiring manager for a dream role.

Hiring Manager: “What can you bring to the company?”

Candidate: “Oh, I have a ton of value.”

Hiring Manager: “Go on.”

Candidate: “The job description said ability to work with others, I can do that!”

The hiring manager nods. The candidate searches for his next word. He pauses.

Me (whispering from far, far away): “That’s a soft skill, which is fine in your resume summary, not now! It’s assumed. Tell them your win narratives!”

Candidate: “And I’m a team player and fast learner.”

Hiring Manager: “What else?”

Candidate: “I’m good at communications.”

Hiring Manager: “How much money and time off do you want, welcome to the team? Let’s head to Applebees.”

🤝 Shake of hands. Hiring manager puts his arm around the candidate.

Hiring Manager: “Company expense of course.”

👉 This will never happen.

👉 You need to:

✅ Be prepared with an arsenal of successes.

✅ Do not be redundant, one win per question, then move on.

✅ Have a binder in front of you (check this article for what goes in the binder).
