I think forgiveness is not only good for your mental health, but also for your career prospects. To keep a bad prior work experience from affecting my next job search, I try to do the following:

Focus on the positive aspects of my previous job, such as the skills I learned, the projects I completed, or the relationships I built.

Acknowledge the negative aspects of my previous job, but don’t dwell on them or blame others. Instead, I try to learn from them and see how I can avoid or overcome similar situations in the future.

Express gratitude for the opportunity to work at my previous job and for the lessons it taught me. I also thank the people who supported me or helped me grow during that time.

Seek feedback from my former colleagues or managers on how I can improve my performance or communication skills. I also ask them for recommendations or referrals if they are willing to provide them.

Prepare for my next job interview by researching the company, the role, and the interviewer. I also practice answering common or behavioral questions that might relate to my previous job experience. I try to highlight my achievements, strengths, and values, and show how they match with the company’s goals and culture.

During the interview, I avoid speaking negatively about my previous job, employer, or co-workers. I also don’t lie or exaggerate about my experience. Instead, I focus on explaining how I adapted to challenges, solved problems, or contributed to positive outcomes. I also show enthusiasm, curiosity, and confidence in my abilities and potential.

These are some of the things I do to keep a bad prior work experience from affecting my next job search.
