New year, new you. Yeah, ok. But can we try a little harder?

Okay, let’s get real for a moment. Beyond all the flashy lights and confetti, there’s that butterfly in our stomach. You know, the one that brings back memories of promises we made but somehow didn’t have that sticktoitiveness. It’s like a quiet whisper of failure we tell ourselves. But guess what? This time, we’re flipping the script. No more of that “new year, new me” stuff. Let’s kick it up a notch and embrace a whole new vibe – the kind where you’re not just setting goals; you’re crushing them with style.

Now, you’re probably scratching your head, wondering, “How do I pull that off?” I get it. In the chaos of goal-setting advice – from SMART goals to HARD goals, WOOP goals, OGSM models, and BHAGs (and hold on, we haven’t even dug into Buffett, Locke & Latham!) – it feels like trying to find your way through a maze blindfolded.

Fear not, intrepid goal-getters! Here’s the decoder ring:

1. Ditch the DUMB, Embrace the SMART (and HARD): Forget “get fit” or “be happier.” These DUMB (Destructive, Uninspired, Meh, Blah) goals lack the specificity that fuels real progress. Instead, craft SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Want to get fit? Aim for “run a 5K by August.” Feeling creatively stagnant? Craft a HARD (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult) goal like “write a short story every month.”

2. Find Your Why with The Golden Circle: Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle reminds us that starting with “why” – your deep motivation – sparks the passion necessary to overcome obstacles. Ask yourself: why do you want that promotion? Why do you want to learn a new language? Connecting to your core purpose fuels the fire that keeps you going when the going gets tough.

3. Tier It Up – From BHAGs to Daily Grinds: Set a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) – a moonshot that stretches your limits. But don’t leave it floating in the ether. Break it down into smaller, quarterly, monthly, and even daily goals. Think of it as building a ladder to your dream – each rung a measurable step towards your BHAG.

4. One-word – A Powerful North Star: Sometimes, simplicity reigns supreme. Choose a single word that encapsulates your aspirations for the year – “Focus,” “Growth,” “Balance.” Let this word be your North Star, guiding your decisions and keeping you centered during turbulent times.

5. The Power of Process: Goals are great, but without a plan, they’re just sparkly daydreams. WOOP goals guide you with a clear Wish (your goal), a vivid Outcome (how you’ll feel when you achieve it), potential Obstacles (and how you’ll overcome them), and a concrete Plan for turning your wish into reality.

6. Backward Planning – Charting the Course: Imagine your goal already achieved. What steps led you there? Backwards planning allows you to reverse engineer your success, highlighting milestones and challenges you need to conquer along the way.

7. OGSM – Aligning Action with Objectives: The OGSM model brings it all together. Define your Objective (what you want to achieve), set clear Goals (the roadmap), outline actionable Strategies (how you’ll get there), and establish relevant Measures (to track your progress).

8. The Buffett Strategy – Prioritize Ruthlessly: Warren Buffett’s “2 list” strategy is legendary. Make two lists: one with your top 25 goals, the other with everything else. Focus ruthlessly on the top 25, ignoring the noise of the rest.

9. Locke and Latham’s – Businesses can achieve greater success by applying specific and measurable goals for employees, and creating clear-cut goals. The theory is that employees have a better sense of direction and become more productive. Goals inspire individuals to work towards a defined target and help businesses achieve a common purpose. Knowing the objective can motivate you to work harder, but if you don’t set achievable and specific goals, you may not reach them.

10. Celebrate, Adjust, Repeat: Achieving goals is a journey, not a destination. Celebrate milestones, acknowledge slip-ups, and adjust your course as needed. Remember, flexibility is key.

This New Year, ditch the fleeting “new you” fad. Embrace the YOU who sets audacious goals, fuels them with purpose, and navigates the journey with intentionality and resilience.

Remember, it’s not about “new year, new you.” It’s about “new year, new YOU – the YOU who makes it happen.”

Now go forth, conquer your goals, and claim your extraordinary year! Snag up that new reality for yourself! The reality you keep wishing for is ready for you, if you’re ready for it.

Hit me up, I’ll help pave the way to start knocking down these goals.
