π§³ But this was not an ideal situation for a 20-something who just saw it as a spot to start.

This is how you excite the hungry students, willing to work for free until maybe, just maybe, a paycheck would come.
β This is how you churn talent, with only a select few who managed to grasp this commission-only concept and run with it.
β This is not how you build a team that will want to work hard, because lack of money will start to cause worries, which leads to non-productive workdays.
