“Glossing” in a career context often refers to the act of downplaying or omitting certain less favorable details on a resume, during an interview, or in professional settings. It’s a tactic some job seekers use to avoid drawing attention to employment gaps, short tenures, or other potential red flags in their work history. It can be a controversial topic because it balances the fine line between putting your best foot forward and potentially misleading employers.
Some career “experts” might argue that while it’s essential to present oneself positively, honesty is crucial. They could suggest that instead of glossing, job seekers should be prepared to address these areas with a positive spinโfocusing on what was learned from the experience.
I caution that glossing can backfire if discovered later, leading to trust issues with a potential employer.
Some of my colleagues might advocate for framing your story in a way that emphasizes strengths and achievements without necessarily highlighting the negatives. This isnโt about lying, but rather about strategic storytelling.
Others like me warn that glossing can sometimes lead to an interview process that is based on false pretenses, which can cause problems if youโre not prepared to deliver on the expectations youโve set. Hiring managers are already stressed and behind, don’t make things harder for them to connect the dots. Strategic framing is bullshit.
Those in favor of glossing may suggest it can be necessary for getting a foot in the door, especially in competitive industries. They might argue that what matters most is performance once on the job. However, other career professionals may argue that building a career on half-truths can lead to long-term dissatisfaction and misalignment between personal values and professional life. I am on the latter side of this argument.
Some alternatives to glossing can be focusing on transferable skills, engaging in continuous learning, or even discussing gaps or weaknesses as areas of growth.
