FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, an American film director, sits next to his production team partner and fellow American director, GEORGE LUCAS.

COPPOLA – “I think it’s a sort of salacious, trying-to-make-money kind of book.”

LUCAS – “It’s going to be a mafia movie. A film about gangsters.”

COPPOLA – “I just don’t see the point of making a movie about an Italian mob family.”

LUCAS – “Listen, Francis, we’re going broke. They’re gonna chain the door since we can’t afford to keep paying the rent of the studio. And you have to do this, we have no other alternative. We need the money.”

COPPOLA – “Ah. The hell with it. Let’s make a movie. But I want Pacino as the son. Brando as the don. Caan as the brother. Any my sister as the sister!”

LUCAS – “Okay, okay.”

COPPOLA – “And for Christ’s sake! I need more than two and a half million for a budget!”

CLINT EASTWOOD stands at the podium.

EASTWOOD – “And best picture goes to…Albert Ruddy, Gray Frederickson and Francis Ford Coppola for the Godfather.”

Director STANLEY KUBRICK stands and applauds.

KUBRICK – “The Godfather was possibly the greatest movie ever made.”

Coppola smiles and turns to Lucas.

COPPOLA – “Well, looks like we’re making another one.”

They laugh. Coppola walks towards the stage to accept his award.

🎥 The Godfather will be recognized tonight at the 94th annual Academy Awards for turning 50!

🎬 The film changed Hollywood because it finally changed the way Italians were depicted on film. It made Italians seem like more fully realized people and not stereotypes. It was a film in Hollywood made by Italians about Italians. Previously, it had not been Italians making mobster films featuring Italian gangsters.

📽️ It won Oscars for best picture, actor (Marlon Brando), and adapted screenplay, and was also nominated for 3 best supporting actor awards (James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Al Pacino), as well as director, editing, costume design, sound, and musical score.

🎞️ The book and movie were recognized for its historical value by the Smithsonian Institution.
