I’ve always advocated for skilled trades! 👨💻👨🏻🔧👩🏾🏭 Can’t outsource ’em and robots haven’t attacked our essential workers yet 🤖
TONS of unions have solid unions! 💪🏼🚧
My dad worked for the UAW for a lot of his 35-year career in the automotive space (28 years at GM) perfecting his tool & die craft. I’ve always respected the hell out of that plant. 🏭
I recruited a ton of automotive engineers, supervisors, managers, quality, etc. you name it. I LOVE walking through automotive facilities. The industrial engineering in those places are quite a testament to humankind’s thinking. Foundries, assembly, engine, transmissions, chassis, battery, plastics, glass, paint, stamping (shoutout to you up there, dad!)…🚗
Been around that smell since I was my son Gus’s age, 5. 👦
I also recruited HVAC techs in LA for Johnson Controls, it can be a lucrative pathway, trust me. 🤑
Some of those chiller mechanics make well into the six figures between being a union journeyman mechanic, getting extra cash on top of union wages because this is the person who is fixing the AC or lights (potential electrician pathway) at Dodger Stadium when crap goes awry, AND a side hustle in the residential, commercial, even industrial space. 🏡🏢🏭
FOR JOBSEEKERS LOOKING TO GET INTO A SKILLED TRADE:
📚🧑💼Research in-demand trade occupations in your local area and the training/certifications required like electrician apprenticeships, plumbing licensing, HVAC technician diplomas, etc.
🧑🎓🚧 Consider vocational programs at technical schools, community colleges or contact local unions to learn about apprenticeship pathways.
🧑🏫🧰 High schools may have vocational programs worth exploring that allow hands-on learning before committing to trade certification.
🤝🧑💼Connect with professionals already working in the trades through professional associations for information on starting careers and available jobs.
This CBS Mornings segment from last week is definitely worth watching for anyone interested in skilled trade careers as it highlights opportunities and strategies for getting started in the field. Seeing students engaged in hands-on learning helps showcase why trades can be rewarding options: https://twitter.com/i/status/1697239344765882494
