Happy Veteran’s Day + A Story About My Grampa Schwager

My mom is the ultimate lineage sleuth for our family.

Her ability to source information about her and my late dad’s (Bob) family is uncanny.

Today, she passed along a wonderful story about my Grampa Schwager as a tribute to #VeteransDay since he was in the US Army.

I will copy/paste the email she sent below to not foil any of it:

🎖️This is about Grandpa Schwager’s WWI Service. I posted on FB but I wanted to send this to you for your records and to share with your kids. The irony of it all amazes me with the date/time of it.

🪖Veteran’s Day occurs on November 11 every year in the United States in honor of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I, known as Armistice Day.

🏵️ Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

🎖️Bob’s dad, Schwager (John Warzel), was only 22 when he was drafted into WWI.

🪖After many years searching on his service I found he was on the S.S.Susquehana that was sailing to the war’s Western Front of Europe on 11-11-1918.

🏵️ The ship left Norfolk at 11:00 AM on 11-11-1918 (at the same time the armistice was signed by the Allies and Germany to end the war).

🎖️At 5:35 PM all engines were stopped and the ship turned around to sail back to port once it was learned the war was over.

🪖How ironic it all is that his ship sailed at that precise time of 11-11-1918 and not knowing the armistice was just signed.

🏵️ How ironic he was spared the horrors of that war.

❤️🤍💙 I also wanted to post some photos that my mom sent over from his experience.
