Quitting your job can be a $hit decision, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, amirite?
TGIF!ย Itโs not just any Friday. The second Friday in January is โQuitterโs Day,โ the point by which most people have abandoned their New Yearโs resolutions. If that describes you, donโt worry: You can still recommit, or at least resolve to enjoy the weekend ahead.
Whether you’re moving on to a new opportunity or just need a change, HOW you leave can impact your future career. ๐ค Quitting your job gracefully without burning bridges or jeopardizing your reputation is key. Itโs all about leaving on a high note and making sure youโre set up for success down the road (a “just in case” scenario). ๐
1. Give proper notice. Provide 2-4 weeks notice, and offer to train your replacement if feasible. Handing off projects is polite, quitting abruptly is rude.
2. Be honest but diplomatic when you’re barking at your soon-to-be former manager. Don’t complain, just make it about seeking new opportunities, growing, etc. Heck, maybe they’ll come back with a salary bump and alleviate your pains right then and there.
3. Ask for a letter of recommendation, their contact email and phone (try to get both work and personal emails/phone numbers in case they jet too). HINT: Provide bullet points of your accomplishments to help your manager write the rec letter.
4. Hire me to update your resume and LinkedIn profile BEFORE putting in notice. Get that brag book full of your accomplishments back open, and download any performance reports to help prepare for the makeovers. Being already open to opportunities allows for a quicker transition (warz65@gmail.com to inquire).
5. Thank colleagues and stay connected on LinkedIn. You may need these people down the road.
6. Finally, reflect on lessons learned even from challenges. Frame the experience positively when discussing it in future interviews rather than complaining. Hit me up if you need help developing this brief and direct interview answer.
Look, leaving your job on good terms not only shows respect for your former employer but also demonstrates your professionalism and maturity. We’re not 16 and this is not Papa Johns.
Quitting your job is not the end of the road, but a new beginning. Those butterflies in your belly, those tickles you feel inside? Those are your reminders that this new you could be exciting. It’s time to listen to your heart.
