🎞️ As a former film producer, you always dream of seeing your work reach audiences far and wide. For me, that dream took an unexpected turn when I stumbled upon a copy of my movie, “Dale Archdale,” in a bin at the Indianapolis Public Library. I couldn’t have scripted if I tried…the very movie I had poured my heart and soul into producing. Seeing it there, in a public library, was a surreal moment. It was a testament to the journey the film had taken—from conception to production, and finally, to distribution.
The journey of creating Dale Archdale was one of passion, grit, and a love for the outrageous humor that the story embodies. We had no illusions about taking Hollywood by storm, but we did have high hopes for connecting with a unique audience who could appreciate our brand of humor. From the early days of script meetings to filming on a tight budget, it was all about getting this story out there in a way that stayed true to its roots.
The journey to get “Dale Archdale” distributed was anything but straightforward. After wrapping up production that took about 7 years too late, we faced the daunting task of finding a distributor. Countless emails, phone calls, and meetings later, we finally secured a deal with a the passionate distribution company, Freestyle Digital Media, from the American Film Market in Santa Monica. They believed in our project and worked tirelessly to get it into the hands of viewers.
Finding the movie in the library bin was a full-circle moment. It was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the film industry and the unexpected ways in which your work can find its audience. It also highlighted the importance of public libraries as community hubs that provide access to a wide range of media, including independent films like ours.
I felt a renewed sense of pride and accomplishment. “Dale Archdale” had found its way into the world, and who knows? Maybe someone else would pick it up from that bin and enjoy it just as much as we enjoyed making it.
For any filmmaker, knowing that their work is out there, accessible to anyone, is an accomplishment. And it’s also humbling – seeing Dale Archdale in the library bin reminded me of the countless hours spent on set, the late nights, and the risks we took to make this film happen. There’s a special kind of pride in knowing that this independent film, born out of pure creativity and grit, could be discovered by anyone flipping through a library’s DVD collection.
Being an independent filmmaker means facing countless obstacles, but it’s moments like these that validate every choice, every sacrifice, and every dollar spent.
