I’ve sat in on hundreds of interview debriefs over the years.
Different industries.
Different levels.
Same patterns—over and over again.
Here’s what separates the offers that change someone’s life from the polite rejection emails.
👇
Pattern #1: High-offer candidates talk like operators, not performers.
They don’t recite responsibilities.
They talk about:
- the numbers they actually watch
- how those numbers connect to the business
- who helped shape how they think
They sound… grounded. Experienced. Human.
Pattern #2: They don’t dominate the conversation.
In fact, they’re curious on purpose.
They ask questions that show they’re already thinking inside the company:
- “What’s working well on this team right now?”
- “What would success look like 6 months in?”
- “Where does this role struggle today?”
They aren’t trying to impress.
They’re trying to understand.
Pattern #3: The candidates who struggle all make the same mistakes.
They:
- wait until the very end to ask questions (or skip them)
- avoid talking numbers because it feels uncomfortable
- take full credit instead of acknowledging teams or mentors
- polish themselves so much they come across as… unreal
Perfection is forgettable.
Perspective isn’t.
If I were interviewing tomorrow, I’d prep like this:
✔️ Write down the metrics I influence—and why they matter
✔️ Be able to explain how my work impacts revenue, cost, or risk
✔️ Research the humans, not just the company page
✔️ Prepare questions Google can’t answer
✔️ Get clear on the specific problems I solve
✔️ And yes—thank the mentors who shaped how I think
Because interviews aren’t about sounding flawless.
They’re about sounding ready.
If you’re getting interviews but not offers, it’s rarely your experience.
It’s usually the story you’re telling—and the one you’re not.

Imagine this…
You crush a story in round one.
They nod, scribble notes, you leave buzzing.
A week later, in the panel debrief:
“Was she the CRM person or the operations one?”
Your greatness got fuzzy.
🧠 That’s the Google Effect:
If it’s not reinforced, it disappears.
🎯 MJW Takeaway:
Your resume, LinkedIn, and follow-up emails are the anchor.
We make sure the story you tell in the room is:
Mirrored in your documents
Echoed in your follow-up
So they don’t just say “pretty good candidate,”
they say:
“That’s the one who cut costs 22% and grew revenue 3x.”
