When I read Rich Dad Poor Dad, there was a particular passage that stuck with me:
“Job is an acronym for ‘Just Over Broke.’”
Unfortunately, I would say that applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial intelligence is an intelligence, most workers live within their means. They work and they pay the bills.
There is another horrible management theory that goes, “Workers work hard enough to not be fired, and owners pay just enough so that workers won’t quit.” And if you look at the pay scales of most companies, again I would say there is a degree of truth to that statement.
Fair? Heck no! Reality? Absolutely.
When I was a recruiter for Johnson Controls, there were union HVAC mechanics I’d hire. They were capped at the rate they earned. Sure, it was well above the residential HVAC mechanics in the area. But, then there were chiller mechanics.
Chiller mechanics are the people who go into the sports arena when the AC is on the fritz. All 6-foot something of a person would enter into an HVAC unit the size of a semi and repair this thing. Keep the fans cozy.
That’s a huge job. And you know what they earned?
Let’s say that as a union member, they received journeymen rates, but they were paid WELL above those as incentives.
We needed them more than they needed us. And good chiller mechanics were hard to come by.
Since the pandemic threw everything into a blender and mixed us all up in terms of time, politics, economics, jobs, prices, supplies, and just about everything else, an odd thing occurred.
Employees were taking back the power.
Employers were doing the scrambling.
And while I still do not know what to expect in the long run, I do know this: it’s a darn good feeling to have some control back. And why not with your career?
Why settle for a job? Go for a career. Heck, shoot for the moon and find your calling.
Happiness is fleeting. Life is short. The time to act is now. And if you need help navigating the career chaos, let me know. Been doing this a long time. This is your livelihood, I understand the importance.
