My quick tip for military members in transition to civilian employment: know your new audience. Focus more on operational impact from a macro-level with fewer military details. Fine-tune the words so they civilianize into easily digestible accomplishments. Remove all the acronyms too and summarize the lengthy listicles, such as awards or training!
🇺🇸 I was fortunate to be featured on this episode of RecruitMilitary LIVE with the awesome and talented Lucas Connolly, where we discussed turning a good resume into a great resume. Some of the topics we tackled included:
🪖 A GREAT resume needs to be strategically organized…what does that even mean? Are you optimizing your use of THE FOLD? Are the key elements of your personal brand, most recent relevant experience, and key skills resident in the top half of the first page? Are your credentials hiding near your education at the bottom of page 2?
🎖️ A GREAT resume is targeted…are you telling me that sending our 200 copies of a generic resume to 200 different companies and playing the law of averages doesn’t work?
🇺🇸 A GREAT resume represents your “brand”…what is that all about?
🪖 A GREAT resume highlights practical experience…but are you highlighting the relevant practical experience the hiring manager is looking for or have you buried the relevant experience under a textbook-length chronology of the last 20 years of your life?
🎖️ A GREAT resume is results-oriented…are you telling people what you did or what you were responsible for instead of accomplishment bullets with quantifiable results that are relevant to the position you are seeking to be hired for?
🇺🇸 A GREAT resume gets in front of hiring managers…Matt how can people make that happen?
🪖 A GREAT resume is only great when it manages to get into the hands of a hiring manager…how can we use the ATS correctly as part of this process?
