There are many ways to network and find out more about a career. But experts suggest one of the most effective forms of networking is the informational interview: One-on-one time spent with another professional learning about their career and/or company to shape your long-term career goals. Prepare for your next informational interview by researching and preparing questions ahead of time.

๐˜”๐˜บ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ต:

Understand The Purpose of an Informational Interview

โ€œOverall, informational interviews can be a valuable tool for anyone looking to gain a better understanding of a specific field or industry, as well as for those who are trying to find job opportunities, build connections, and advance in their career,โ€ said Matt Warzel, career coach and resume writer.

How To Prepare for Your Informational Interview

Warzel adds that itโ€™s generally a good idea to do your due diligence by researching your desired interviewee before you make the first point of contact.

โ€œBefore you ask someone for an informational interview, make sure you know who they are and what they do,โ€ said Warzel. โ€œLook them up on LinkedIn, research their background and experience and identify what they can specifically offer you.โ€

From there, he advises that you personalize your message and make it clear that you have done your research and know who they are.

Warzel also says you should make sure to explain your reasons for wanting to interview them in your message to them, as this shows that you have done your research and know about the field or industry you want to know more about.

Above all, Warzel states that the most important thing to remember with your request is to be polite, respectful and professional โ€” and to not be discouraged if they say no.

How To Prepare Questions for the Interview

Warzel adds a few more helpful tips when it comes to preparing for your interview:

  • Practice the questions beforehand with a friend or family member to become comfortable with the format and the flow of the conversation.
  • Make sure to dress professionally (even if itโ€™s a virtual meeting).
  • Be on-time.
  • Remember to bring something to take notes with, as this will help you reflect back on the interview later.
  • Send a follow-up letter to your interviewee after the meeting thanking them for their time.

โ€œBy preparing beforehand, you will be able to make the most of your informational interview and gain valuable insights and advice from the person you are interviewing,โ€ said Warzel. โ€œYou’ll also be able to make a good impression which may lead to future connections and opportunities.โ€

Learn How Informational Interviews Are Beneficial

Warzel also notes the following points as to why conducting informational interviews can benefit your career in the long term.

You will:

  • Learn valuable information: You will gain insight into your specific industry, as well as companies and jobs you are interested in that you would not have otherwise had access to just by doing online research.
  • Build your network: โ€œAn informational interview is also a great networking opportunity,โ€ said Warzel. โ€œBuilding relationships with people who are already working in your desired field can help you learn about potential job openings and provide you with an inside look into the industry.โ€
  • Pinpoint relevant skills and qualifications: An informational interview will give you an idea of the day-to-day responsibilities of a specific role or position, which will allow you to get a better idea of the skills and qualifications necessary for the job. You can then brush up on those skills and/or better tailor your resume and job application to better fit the requirements.
  • Improve your interviewing skills: โ€œInformational interviews can also help you practice your interviewing skills, which can be beneficial if you are planning to apply for a job in the near future,โ€ said Warzel.
  • Solidify or alter your career path: by talking to experienced professionals in your desired career field, you will have valuable input to validate any companies or particular roles you are interested in.

โ€œSee if the reality matches with your idea; if it does not, it might make you change your mind about your career path,โ€ said Warzel.
