Whether or not you are actively looking for a job, there are always proactive steps you can take that will lead to your future job-search success. Details like preparing your references and consistently developing your personal brand are smart moves to make before you start the job-search process that can set you up for long-term success.

Are you unsure how to have the best chance of securing the job you want? Or maybe youโ€™re currently happily employed but want to make sure youโ€™re set up for success, should you need to look for another job.

Regardless of where you are in your career, there are proven actions you can โ€” and should โ€” take to help guide you in your future job search.

๐˜”๐˜บ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ต:

Undeniably, one of the strongest actions you can take from the start of your career is to begin (and never stop) networking.

โ€œNetworking is and always will be the main strategy for a successful [job] transition,โ€ said Matt Warzel, career coach and resume writer. โ€œWho you know will never go away.โ€

With that thought, Warzel stresses that the key is to plant as many hypothetical โ€œseeds,โ€ so you can one day see the blossoming flower that is the opportunity youโ€™ve been looking for.

โ€œEither way, get to networking and start sending folks some value in the form of advice, a link of interest, some industry or competitor news, etc., so they can reciprocate.โ€

Keep Track of Your Accomplishments

โ€œAlways maintain a brag book of achievements so you can update your resume regularly,โ€ said Warzel. โ€œI consider the resume a living breathing thing. It needs to be tended to, so I would advise on updating or having it updated every 6 months to a year.โ€

Review Your Resume Regularly

Your resume shouldnโ€™t be neglected for years on end until the moment when you are entering the job search.

โ€œThe last thing you want to do is rush the resume development once someone does request an updated resume,โ€ said Warzel.

Practice Telling Your Career Story

โ€œEnsure you have all your project narratives in order and ready to share each success depending on the question,โ€ said Warzel. โ€œ โ€ฆ Your narratives are vital and not only for the job but for your pay rate.โ€

Research Top Jobs, Companies and Recruiters in Your Industry

โ€œGain confidence by researching the role and investigating the industry, major players, and products/offerings/services and news,โ€ said Warzel. โ€œPay attention to the industry, its competitors, company news and other open roles within the industry. The more knowledge and understanding of the role and company โ€” paired with stories to share of your accomplishments and previous duties that relate to the job โ€” the more confidence you will have going into an interview.โ€

He also offers the following points:

  • Learn the terminology and respective process impact in this new role.
  • Understand the function your new role would play in the entire operation.
  • Understand why there is an opening
  • Gain clarity on any pain points the hiring managers may have because of the opening.

Have a Plan for Your Career

Are you thinking about how to upskill and advance your career? If not, Warzel suggests this is critical to maintaining a rising trajectory for your career path.

โ€œSetting goals should be a year-round event,โ€ said Warzel. โ€œDrop some, add some; whatever it takes so you can advance your career. The idea is to reverse-engineer some of the career paths of those you are interested in becoming one day and figure out what goals need to be set to achieve that progression.โ€

Consider Meeting with a Career Coach

โ€œI always consider a career coach as someone you should check in with every 6 months to a year as well,โ€ said Warzel.

He states that this is a professional who can help you dissect how you are feeling in your role, how your reviews and salary raises are going and if you have a succession plan.

Start โ€” and Never Stop โ€” Learning New Skills

โ€œReverse engineer your career path from your ideal jobโ€™s description and see what you have and what needs up-skilling,โ€ said Warzel.
