For some employees, regular raises are one big perk of working in corporate America. In fact, theΒ average base pay increase in the U.S. in 2027Β is expected to be around 3.5%, which is just a bit higher than the actual 3.4% average pay increase employees received in 2026.
While salary bumps help workers maintain their buying power as prices increase naturally over time, theΒ vast majority of raisesΒ are more than mere cost-of-living adjustments, with 89% of pay increases offered due to merit.
Unfortunately, far too many workers arenβt aggressive about negotiating their salary, asΒ 57% of employeesΒ admit theyβve never asked for a pay increase. This can leave workers falling behind, especially the most loyal ones in high-paying positions. In fact, among workers earning $125,000 or more,Β 30% of tenured employees end up making lessΒ than newer coworkers.
My take:
If it turns out Joe is underpaid, he can develop a plan to move forward. βI would quietly test the market, research what comparable roles are paying, and document the results Iβve delivered over those eight years. Then Iβd meet with my manager and make a specific, evidence-based request for a market adjustment, not simply argue that a coworker received more,βΒ Matthew Warzel, president of MJW Careers, told Moneywise.
Warzel agrees. βI would not quit just to see whether the company suddenly finds another $15,000…that is a dangerous bluff.β
