Asking for a raise can already feel like a stressful endeavor, as proving your worth and presenting the strongest case possible is no small feat. Even if you’re of a mindset that raises should come annually, such decisions are often tied to business results and increased responsibility within the company as opposed to time.

My take:

1. Timing Is Everything

A promotion should come with a pay conversation, but you may have a case without a new title, too. Maybe you now manage people or handle a larger client portfolio while your salary has stayed the same.

Matthew Warzel, a career coach at MJW Careers with 20 years of recruiting and outplacement experience, said timing the ask matters as much as building the case.

“The best time is after a visible win and before annual budgets or compensation decisions are finalized,” Warzel said.
