Transferable skills, as the name suggests, are skills you can transfer from one job to another. These may be soft skills, like collaboration and problem-solving, or hard skills, such as data analytics or coding.

This guide will help you learn more about transferable skills, transferable skills examples, and how to identify and build yours so you can include them in your job application.

Including Transferable Skills on a Resume

Once you’ve identified the target skills from the job description, strategically place these skills on your resume. Don’t be afraid to include the exact skills from the job description.

“Recruiters decide who to advance through the hiring process by searching resumes for these specific keywords and phrases,” Matthew Warzel, CPRW resume writer, says. “It’s mandatory to add this core competency section.”

Warzel recommends including hard skills under a “core competencies” section and soft skills in the summary section.

For example, to emphasize your soft skills, you may adjust your summary:

• Instead of: “Hardworking student seeking an internship.”
• Try: “Highly motivated and collaborative student with proven communication and problem-solving skills, seeking an internship in [Industry/Field].”

You can make your experience section more effective by including transferable skills:

• Instead of: “Managed social media accounts.”
  Try: “Managed social media accounts for a student organization, developing and implementing content strategies that increased follower engagement by 20% and brand awareness by 10%. Effectively managed time and resources to meet tight deadlines and maintain consistent posting schedules.”

And if you’re working on your skills section:

• Instead of: just listing software like “Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word”
• Try: listing by specific transferable skills, like:
  • Data Analysis: Excel, data entry, data cleaning, data visualization
  • Presentation: PowerPoint, public speaking skills, persuasive communication
  • Written communication: Word, content creation, proofreading, editing
