Retail workers looking for a career change possess transferable skills like customer service, sales, and time management. These make them well-suited for many positions like human resources and recruiting. Start your career change by writing a resume that highlights transferable skills and your achievements while in the retail position.

๐˜”๐˜บ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ต:

Which Retail Skills Are Transferable?

The top transferable skill retail professionals have is customer service. This includes communication and conflict resolution skills.

โ€œYou are the face of the store or business, so it’s imperative that [customer satisfaction] is priority one,โ€ said career coach and resume writer Matt Warzel. โ€œ[Retail workers also have] people skills in terms of working with your manager, customers, and colleagues. So that kind of cross-functional communicationโ€ฆ I think is a big part of it because a lot of times in retail, how you speak and how you engage with people will come from how your tone is and how your manners are.โ€

Some skills retail workers might not realize they have include financial literacy and software skills. Handling money transactions requires some financial skills. Operating point of sale systems requires technological knowledge.

โ€œNowadays, a lot of things are kind of moving away from the old clunky cash register and getting more of that software implementation,โ€ Warzel said. โ€œYou can definitely learn a lot of technical aptitude in retail. For early-career folks that might be in high school, itโ€™s their chance to get their hands on some software that isn’t something they’re used to.โ€

โ€œYou have a truckload in the back and you have to go and make sure everything finds its way to the shelves,โ€ Warzel said. โ€œSo you have a project and youโ€™ve got to make sure you get it done within a certain timeframe.โ€

Which Jobs Are Best for Former Retail Professionals?

The above transferable skills are most suited to the following positions, according to Smiley and Warzel, plus lists from Career School Now and Easy Career Change:

  • Sales agent
  • Customer service representative
  • Human resources worker
  • Recruiter
  • Billing specialist
  • Real estate broker or agent
  • Office manager
  • Hospitality worker
  • Lab assistant

How to Write a Career Change Resume for Former Retail Workers

A strong resume is key to a successful career change. Warzel recommends using the combinational resume format. This format gives equal weight to the experience and skills sections, combining the reverse-chronological and functional resume formats.

โ€œWith this combinational format, what’s nice is you can add an accomplishment section right before the experience and really start to put in some relatable accomplishments or achievements toward your next career, depending on where you want to go,โ€ Warzel said.

โ€œUse that accomplishment section to your advantage. You definitely want to make sure those relatable achievements are in the forefront. You don’t want them buried under your Domino’s job or something similar.โ€

Tailor the resume to the position you are looking for. Take advantage of buzzwords related to what you did in the retail position. But donโ€™t lie or stretch the truth.

Here are some relevant buzzwords Warzel suggests:

  • Project management
  • Data analysis
  • Vendor management
  • Document control
  • Quality assurance
  • Strategic planning

โ€œYou’re looking at your store as a manager โ€” what are your goals for a certain season in terms of sales? What are your goals in terms of satisfaction rating?โ€ Warzel said. โ€œSo you start to strategize and plan some of the ways to reach those goals. So strategic planning is one of those terms I think that can be quite broad.โ€
