Even if you havenโt had your first professional job, chances are youโve gained some transferable skills from internships, volunteering, classes, and even extracurriculars. Transferable skills, as the name suggests, are skills you can transfer from one job to another. These may be soft skills, like collaboration and problem-solving, or hard skills, such as data analytics or coding.
Transferable skills are often called โportable skillsโ because you can bring what youโve learned from one job to another. You can apply these general skills to various fields, working environments, and industries.
For example, problem-solving skills are valuable transferable skills because employers look to hire people who can help them find solutions. Yet a marketer will use these skills differently than a data analyst. The marketer may problem-solve how to bring a bigger audience to their site. The data analyst may problem-solve why revenue is down by digging through the results of past sales efforts. Both are using the same problem-solving skills but applying them differently.

โ๏ธ How to Include Transferable Skills in a Job Application
โRecruiters decide who to advance through the hiring process by searching resumes for these specific keywords and phrases,โ Matthew Warzel, CPRW resume writer, says. โItโs mandatory to add this core competency section.โ
Warzel recommends including hard skills under a โcore competenciesโ section and soft skills in the summary section.
๐กKEY NOTES TO REMEMBER:
๐ I would add “buzzwords” you can find from the job descriptions or LinkedIn endorsements section to filter into your resume to comply with the ATS.
๐ You want to work on incorporating keywords and strategies for the digital application process. Not only do these applicant tracking systems (ATS) organize and sort applications, they can also be programmed to screen candidates based on what content you include in your resume. At this point, recruiters can search submissions using keywords and phrases to identify candidates to advance through the hiring process.
It’s mandatory on your resume. You need to add this core competency section.
๐ Continue to add to these as you acquire more experience that brings along new methodologies, leadership strategies or styles, and additional technical aptitude.
๐ And fill the resume up with hard skills! Leave the soft skills as adjectives in the summary section. That is the only place soft skills should be mentioned.
