In my experience working with professionals in the U.S. and Canada, many do use platforms like Freelancer, Upwork, and Fiverr, but they approach them with a cautious and strategic mindset. These marketplaces can be great entry points for building experience, finding clients, and developing a portfolio, but they also require vigilance because of the potential for scams and low-quality offers.

A few key points I often share with clients:

Scams exist everywhere online — even on big, reputable platforms. The difference is that experienced freelancers learn how to spot and avoid them quickly.

Success on these sites often requires patience — it can take time to build a profile, gather reviews, and establish credibility.

Diversification is smart — don’t rely solely on one platform. Many freelancers eventually branch out to direct client relationships, LinkedIn outreach, and niche job boards.

Skill-building is critical — like the representatives you spoke to mentioned, taking courses (Coursera, Udemy, etc.) is a great way to position yourself for higher-value opportunities.

So yes — U.S. and Canadian freelancers do use these platforms “normally and easily” once they’ve learned the ropes, but they also tend to combine them with other networking and marketing efforts to maximize results and minimize risk.

✅ How to Spot Scams on Freelance Platforms:
Too-good-to-be-true offers — Extremely high pay for very little work is a red flag.

Requests to move off-platform early — Legitimate clients will stick to the site’s messaging and payment system until trust is built.

Upfront payment requests (from you) — If they ask you to pay for “training,” “software,” or “registration” before work starts, it’s almost always a scam.

Poor communication or vague job descriptions — Real clients will be specific about what they need.

Suspicious payment methods — Always use the platform’s payment system; never accept checks, wire transfers, or gift cards.

Pressure to act immediately — Scammers push urgency so you won’t think things through.

Start with small, quick projects — Build your profile, collect reviews, and prove your reliability.

Specialize in a niche — You’ll stand out more if you focus on one service or industry at first.

Optimize your profile — Use a professional photo, detailed bio, and keyword-rich description of your skills.

Submit tailored proposals — Address each client’s needs directly instead of using a copy-paste pitch.

Deliver early and over-deliver — Positive reviews are your best marketing tool on these platforms.

Track your progress — Keep notes on what types of projects and pitches get the best results.

Gradually raise your rates — As your reputation grows, so should your fees.
