When I read my Axios @Work newsletter this morning, I came across an article by Erica Pandey with the following:
Zumping: A portmanteau of Zoom and dumping, “zumping” is firing employees by video. “Some companies have chosen to scale up the method by firing many people, sometimes thousands, in a single Zoom session. Tech firms seem particularly prone. In May, a tearful Uber executive laid off 3,500 people on one call, her eyes appearing to dart away off-camera (perhaps towards a script, some observers suggested).”
Wait, what!?
Have we lost our friggin’ minds, people!?
I get it.
Terminations happen. Attrition happens. Money needs to keep flowing.
But aside from the fact that a lot of companies are taking advantage of the COVID-19 crisis by leveraging it as an excuse to layoff folks, there’s this.
There’s hiring managers that decided, “Shit, let’s just Zoom ’em outta here.”
Well shame on you if you’re apart of this herd.
Shame on you for not providing a more dignified and humane departure.
Shame on you for not getting it.
I pray for those impacted by this nasty virus. If you were made redundant recently, know that you must carry on.
Do not let the anxiety take over.
Fight like hell. At least that’s in your control.
How do you feel about this zumping trend?
