RECRUITER on phone, speaking with CANDIDATE.
Recruiter – “Can you provide me with your most recent manager #references at the last 2 jobs?”
Candidate – “I don’t have those. I can provide you with a teacher from my high school, and my neighbor. He works as a stock analyst.”
Recruiter – “How come you can’t get me the managers?”
Candidate – “Because they stunk and is the reason I don’t work there anymore. They fired me, but it was their fault.”
Recruiter – “Ah, that’s why you were terminated? OK, well I will keep you in mind for future roles. Thanks.”
Recruiter hangs up the phone.
๐ This should never happen, if candidates think they can pull a fast one on a #recruiter, that’s the least of their career journey issues. If you want to succeed in the hiring process, you must:
โ Present a better explanation of your situation at your former roles, no matter how toxic they might have been to work at.
โ Never bash your former employer no matter what. To explain why you left, keep it short and sweet and very matter-of-fact (they can check the reason when verifying employment with HR).
โ Clarify the reference with former managers to establish a similar story/explanation of why it went off the rails. Honesty is key.
