The RECRUITER rushes into the HIRING MANAGER’s office, carrying a resume application in hand.

Recruiter: “Sir, you need to see this! I think I found our programmer!”

Hiring Manager: “Oh?”

Recruiter: “I heard of this kid, he was doing something big over at Reed College, something with computers.”

Hiring Manager: “Let me see that!”

The Hiring Manager grabs the resume. Recruiter nibbles on his nails.

Hiring Manager: “I don’t like it. It’s sloppy, doesn’t show any value, and this kid didn’t even graduate!”

Recruiter: “But sir–”

Hiring Manager: “No buts! Next!”

Hiring Manager: “Jobs won’t ever find a job!”

Hiring Manager laughs maniacally. Recruiter joins in uncomfortably until–

Hiring Manager: “Enough! Go work!”

Recruiter hangs his head and heads out of the office.

👉 This should never happen but Steve should’ve also shown a little more effort on his resume like:

✅ More successes.

✅ Keywords that resonate.

✅ A message of what he’s done and what he can do for the company.

👉 How do feel about hiring managers who sometimes miss out on that diamond in the rough?

PS – Steve got a job at Atari the following year and created Pong.

Thanks to his successful business endeavors, Steve Jobs didn’t have to apply for many jobs in his too-short life.

He did apply for one in 1973, however, and used this handwritten application to do so.

In addition to listing his name, birth date, and address (Reed College), Jobs lists experience with both computers and calculators, and “electronic tech or design engineer” among his special abilities.
