The Degree Debate Just Got More Complicated Thanks to AI

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀, 𝗜 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: “𝘋𝘰 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘫𝘰𝘣?”

My answer?

It depends.

Some careers absolutely require one. If you want to be a physician, engineer, attorney, or certain licensed professional, a degree is non-negotiable.

But many employers today care far more about what you can do than where you learned it.

I’ve seen candidates with no degree land six-figure roles because they had the right experience, certifications, portfolio, network, and ability to solve business problems.

I’ve also seen people spend tens of thousands of dollars on degrees that delivered little to no return on investment.

The conversation gets even more complicated when you factor in AI.

Think about it.

A student entering college today may graduate four years from now into a workforce that looks dramatically different than it does today. Some degree programs—especially in rapidly evolving technology fields—can become partially outdated before graduation.

AI, automation, and emerging technologies are changing skill requirements faster than many academic institutions can update their curriculum.

That’s why lifelong learning matters more than ever.

Degrees can be valuable.

Certifications can be valuable.

Bootcamps can be valuable.

Hands-on experience can be valuable.

The key is understanding what the market actually values for the role you’re pursuing.

There is no universal answer because hiring is messy.

Different industries.
Different hiring managers.
Different companies.
Different locations.
Different expectations.

My advice?

Invest in learning. Continuously.

Just make sure you’re investing in skills that have a realistic return on investment for the career you want—not simply collecting credentials.

Education is important.

Employability is the goal.

Positive life’s work is the mission.
