Let me take you back to 2005, to an interview I had with Progressive Insurance for a recruiter role. I was on top of the world, thinking I had the perfect job lined up. ✨ They’re HQ is in Cleveland, I grew up in Cleveland, right down the street!

Everything was going great until the interviewer asked me to describe a situation where I had to handle a difficult challenge. I launched into my story, detailing the steps I took to resolve it… and then I said it.

I casually dropped the word “crap.” 🤦‍♂️

Yup, I said it right there in the middle of a professional interview. One moment I was confident, the next I was mentally facepalming. I could see it in the interviewer’s face — the shift in energy. Suddenly, I wasn’t the polished candidate I thought I was. Long story short, I didn’t get the job. And trust me, I definitely learned from that mistake.

Here’s the thing: while I had the perfect qualifications and skills for the role, that one slip of the tongue cost me big time. It wasn’t about what I said—it was how I said it. 🚫

The Lesson Learned 📚:

Master Storytelling: Interviews are about telling your story in a structured, clear way. Use strong, professional language. Every word counts. You can be casual in the right settings, but keep your words in check when it comes to interviews. If I could go back in time, I’d focus more on telling my story with poise and precision. And definitely leave the slang behind.

Stay Professional: It’s easy to think of the interviewer as a friend, especially when you’re comfortable with them. But let me tell you this—they are not your friend. They’re hiring managers, not your therapist. Stay friendly but professional. Save the personal connections for once you’re officially hired. 🤝

This experience taught me that job interviews are all about showcasing your professional best, both in what you say and how you say it. It’s not just about answering the questions—it’s about presenting yourself in the most polished way possible.
