Ever notice how EVERYONE suddenly becomes a career expert when you start looking for a job? šŸ˜‚

Your friend says your resume needs to be one page.

A recruiter says two pages.

Someone on LinkedIn says cover letters are dead.

Another person says they’re essential.

One expert tells you to apply to 50 jobs a week.

Another says never apply without networking first.

Then someone tells you AI should write everything.

And another tells you employers can immediately detect AI.

Eventually you’re sitting there thinking:

“WHAT THE HELL AM I ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO DO?”

That’s another executive job search trio I see constantly:

FRUSTRATION: “I’m getting conflicting career advice from everywhere.”

DESIRE: “I want personalized, actionable guidance for MY situation.”

FEAR: “What if I make the wrong move and end up in another role that doesn’t fit me?”

Here’s the problem:

Most career advice isn’t necessarily BAD.

It’s just not necessarily right for YOU.

The strategy for a CFO pursuing another C-suite position shouldn’t look exactly like the strategy for a director changing industries.

Someone returning after a career break needs something different than an executive quietly exploring opportunities while still employed.

That’s why career coaching shouldn’t be:

“Here’s my system. Everybody do the same thing.”

It should start with YOU.

What do you want?

What are you good at?

What aren’t you willing to tolerate anymore?

What compensation do you need?

What kind of company fits you?

What type of work actually energizes you?

What does the next chapter need to look like?

THEN we build the strategy.

Resume.

LinkedIn.

Networking.

Target companies.

Interviewing.

Salary negotiation.

And accountability when the search gets frustrating.

Because landing another job isn’t always the goal.

Landing the RIGHT job is.

The last thing I want is to help someone escape a job they hate only to land them in another job they’ll hate six months later.

MJW Takeaway:

Stop trying to follow every piece of career advice you see online.

You don’t need MORE advice.

You need the RIGHT strategy for your experience, goals, values, and situation.

There isn’t one perfect job search formula.

There’s YOUR formula.

Let’s build that one.
