1. Put your content into 3 buckets. If anything you’ve done that you’re proud of fit into these buckets, put it on your resume.
Bucket 1: Is it relatable? Reverse-engineer 5 job descriptions online as your exercise.
Bucket 2: Does it impact the bottom line? Check out your performance reviews! What are the metrics you’re tied to? Time, money, efficiency, productivity, etc.
Bucket 3: Is it unique? Organizations and memberships, volunteering, high-profile clients, speeches, awards, continuous improvements, TV/radio and print media appearances, company intranet mentions, positive online viral moments, Olympic appearances! You get the idea. What well rounds out your candidacy better than some cool stuff too?
Now the tricky part. Take all 3 content buckets and start building your resume from scratch using the correct formatting, template style, and wording.
The last one there…wording…commanding the English language on paper. That’s where people like myself who’ve been doing this for 21 years understand that brevity wins. Get to the point. This is a modern resume. This is your sales sheet, not an autobiography.
The resume should be like a screenplay…use the least amount of words to drive the story forward.
