A bridge job is a temporary job between your usual career path roles. It’s a way to relieve a temporary need like a source of income while searching for your typical career roles. They also usually involve an acceptance into the job without many barriers…including many where you use an application over resume. They also do not require as many skills or prior accomplishments in that given role/industry, including retail or grocery cashiers, landscaping helpers, delivery drivers, or commission-only-based sales roles.

I say go for it! Do whatever you can to meet the needs of you and your family. Now, if the job goes onto the resume is another question, which depends on length of tenure, transferable skills acquired, or a gap filler. It should not be looked down upon, ever.

Depends again on its transferability and if it’s a way to “cover-up” some red flags. If it’s very temporary, then it doesn’t do much in terms of up-skilling, doesn’t relate to your typical career path, and doesn’t cover up any red flags, so it’s safe to say that most of the time it can remain off the resume. I also use years instead of months for clients with red flags involving their employment timeline, and if a temporary bridge job doesn’t affect the years on the resume, it’s probably safe to skip it and just use your most recent permanent role you just left.
Example: If someone got laid off in January 2022 and took a bridge job from February through November 2022, then got hired in November 2022 with a typical role on their career trajectory, it’s OK to leave it off and just list the last role “through 2022” or “1998-2022 (for a specific example)” and the new role as “2022-Present”

5. Commission-only-based sales roles (i.e., mortgage, insurance)
Taking a bridge job can be a smart move to meet your immediate financial needs while you continue your job search. These roles can provide a source of income without detracting from your long-term career goals. To stay relevant, focus on applying for positions aligned with your career path, but don’t hesitate to take a bridge job if needed. Remember, the closer it relates to your ultimate career goal, the better transferability. Keep your resume clean by omitting short-term roles unless they add transferable skills or fill an employment gap.
Most importantly, stay humble. You gotta do what you gotta do for you and your loved ones.
