Why I threw away your resume (from the worldโ€™s crankiest recruiter)…

How bad is the job market for tech workers? This past week, I posted my first job posting on Linkedin in months. Within 24 hours, I received over 560+ applicants.

Now, I have to tell you: Iโ€™m probably the worldโ€™s crankiest recruiter. The idea of reading 560+ resumes makes me impatient, cynical, and even a bit sadistic. After a few hours of shifting through these resumes, I predictably got rid of 95% of them. Here are 5 reasons why I probably threw your resume in the trash…

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Takeaways for Job Seekers:

๐Ÿ“œย Write a killer cover letterย โ€“ Personalize it, highlight key skills, and connect your experience to the job. No boilerplate!

๐ŸŽฏย Your mission statement must WOWย โ€“ Avoid generic statements. Instead, craft a unique value proposition (UVP) that sets you apart.

๐Ÿ“Šย Quantify your impactย โ€“ Donโ€™t just list tasks; showย whyย they mattered! Use numbers, outcomes, and real business impact.

๐Ÿ“„ย Keep your resume conciseย โ€“ 2 pages max (unless you’re a CEO). Use bullet points, not walls of text.

โณย Job-hopping raises red flagsย โ€“ Too many short stints (under 2 years) might make hiring managers hesitant. If there’s a reason (like a company shutdown), clarify it!

๐Ÿ’กย Final Tips:

Hiring managers haveย seconds to decide. Make their job easier by proving youโ€™re the perfect fitโ€”fast! Help them, help you.

The resume needs to be logical first and foremost. If the reader is wrinkling their forehead, you’ve lost the initial battle.

Use role/industry research as a way to spot relevant keywords (for the core competencies and summary sections), role responsibilities (for the experience section), and important transferable contributions (for the accomplishments section) for inclusion on your resume.

Next, make sure it has optimized keywords, a summary that preaches your USP and value, quantifiable content (even if there are no metrics, but metrics are preferred), and a format/layout that adheres to ATS mandates. Think experience content as 3 buckets: relatable/transferrable, data-driven KPIs and unique wins such as awards, speeches or media appearances.

The key to standing out among the competition is to ensure you set the tone in the first top half of the resume with what you offer, any key skills that speak to your abilities to transition into those new roles seamlessly, and any transferable skills and accomplishments that directly relate to this new role.

How can you be the Tylenol to the hiring team’s pains, and how can you make their lives easier? Convey this in as little verbiage as possible.๐Ÿ’Š
