Your resume might be perfectly written…

for the job you already have.

And THAT could be the problem.

I see this constantly with professionals who want to make a career move.

They’ve built 10, 15, maybe 20+ years of experience.

Their resume documents it beautifully.

Every promotion.

Every responsibility.

Every project.

Every skill.

But then I ask one question:

“What job are you trying to get NEXT?”

Suddenly, things get fuzzy. 😂

Here’s an easy way to think about it:

Your resume shouldn’t be a rearview mirror.

It should be a GPS.

Yes, we need to show where you’ve been.

But everything should help point the employer toward where you’re trying to GO.

Want to move from operations into strategy?

We emphasize the strategic work you’ve already done.

Want to transition industries?

We identify transferable accomplishments and translate the language.

Want to move from Director to VP?

We elevate leadership, decision-making, organizational impact, and executive-level results.

Want to change careers completely?

We stop trying to sell you as the OLD version of yourself.

That’s where tailoring really matters.

And no, that doesn’t mean rewriting your entire resume from scratch for every application.

It means building a strong core resume around a CLEAR target, then adjusting the messaging based on the opportunity.

Because employers aren’t hiring you simply because you’ve done impressive things.

They’re asking:

“Can this person solve OUR problems?”

Your resume needs to make that connection obvious.

That’s a huge part of what I do with clients.

Before obsessing over fonts, keywords, bullets, or formatting, we figure out the destination.

Then we build the document to get you there.

MJW Takeaway:

Stop writing your resume entirely around the career you’ve already had.

Write it for the career you WANT.

Your past provides the evidence.

Your target provides the direction.

And when those two finally line up?

That’s when your resume starts doing its job.
