One of the hardest parts of an executive job search?

Knowing how to sell the SAME career to completely different audiences.

You might be targeting:

A leadership role in your current industry.

A similar role in a new industry.

A broader operational position.

A consulting opportunity.

Or something that doesn’t perfectly match the title you’ve held for the last 10 years.

Suddenly you’re staring at your resume thinking:

“How the hell do I make all of this translate?” šŸ˜‚

That’s where I see another common executive job search trio:

FRUSTRATION: “I’m struggling to adapt my resume for different industries.”

DESIRE: “I want employers to immediately recognize me as a top executive candidate.”

FEAR: “What if I finally get the interview and don’t make a strong enough impression?”

Here’s the mistake:

Trying to make yourself look like a completely different person for every opportunity.

You don’t need five different professional identities.

You need ONE strong leadership story that can be repositioned around what each audience values.

Maybe one company cares about revenue growth.

Another cares about transformation.

Another needs someone who can scale operations.

Another wants a leader who can build teams and navigate change.

Your experience hasn’t changed.

The lens has.

That’s how I approach resumes with executives making industry changes.

We identify the core leadership value first.

Then we determine which accomplishments, language, skills, and business outcomes matter most to the target.

And that positioning needs to continue into the interview.

Because landing the interview isn’t the finish line.

You still need to clearly explain:

Why you.

Why this role.

Why this industry.

Why now.

And why your experience translates.

If the employer has to connect all those dots themselves, you’re making their decision harder.

MJW Takeaway:

You don’t need to reinvent your entire career every time you pursue a different opportunity.

You need to understand your value well enough to translate it.

Same executive.

Same experience.

Different audience.

Different story.
