Your Resume Needs a Rewrite, Not a Refresh

Your resume probably isn’t getting rejected because you’re unqualified.

It’s getting rejected because it looks exactly like everyone else’s.

After 20+ years as a recruiter, resume writer, and career coach, I’ve learned one thing:

Most resumes fail long before a recruiter ever reads the second page.

Why?

They’re overloaded with responsibilities.

Filled with generic buzzwords.

Built from free templates.

And written like a job description instead of a marketing document.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen resumes filled with phrases like:

❌ Results-driven professional

❌ Team player

❌ Detail-oriented

❌ Excellent communication skills

Great.

But what did you actually accomplish?

A strong resume tells a story.

A weak resume lists tasks.

There’s a huge difference between these two bullets:

BEFORE:

Managed a team of sales representatives.

AFTER:

Led a 12-person sales team that increased annual revenue by 34% while expanding into three new markets.

See the difference?

One tells me what you were responsible for.

The other shows me the impact you made.

And let’s talk about resume templates for a second.

Templates aren’t evil.

They’re just designed to be generic.

Your career isn’t generic.

I’ve worked with professionals returning to the workforce after years away, executives navigating layoffs, military veterans transitioning into civilian careers, and career changers entering completely new industries.

No template can tell those stories effectively.

One of my favorite client success stories involved a professional who had been applying for months without a single interview.

We didn’t change their experience.

We changed how their experience was presented.

We reorganized their accomplishments, quantified their results, repositioned their career transition, and rewrote their professional story.

Within weeks, interviews started showing up.

The experience didn’t change.

The messaging did.

MJW Takeaway:

Your resume shouldn’t be a list of everything you’ve ever done.

It should be a carefully crafted story that convinces employers you’re the right person for what’s next.

Quality always beats quantity.

Every single time.
